The knit-wit

Dear Anne
Firstly thank you! My grandmother is 99 and an avid reader of MKM. Her knitting has given her a new lease of life since she lost her legs and a kidney a few years ago in an unfortunate accident in her Lebanese-made stair lift. After a long period of depression, she took to knitting again and has been working for 12 years on her pièce de resistance - the Knit Wit. This is an amusing comedy character I devised in my spare time for use by the TV people. As yet I’ve still to find a suitable vehicle for Knit Wit and his zany wool-based capers.

My grandmother however has shown unnerving faith and has knitted a 3D Knit Wit, measuring 18 feet tall, by hand. I wonder if this a world record for a knitted character? After you got in touch, my grandmother agreed to be photographed but we did encounter a problem. The Knit Wit is now so large it is stored in my brother’s garage. My grandmother has been working on various body parts, which she then knits on once we spend a couple of hours loading the Knit Wit into the back of an open-bed trailer and carefully manoeuvring it into her house, whilst trying not to damage too many items. At the last count we’ve only broken two vases and a door handle.

We took a picture of the Knit Wit and one of her, which I then gave to a friend to superimpose. (Sorry, it’s all a little too technical for me!) I’ve attached the picture and hope it’s of sufficient quality to print. She will be made up if it is. Her name is Ruby Heek-Cegg and she lives in Barnet, Hertfordshire. Keep up the good work!

All the best
Pat Keriss
