I’ve just been given the above machine and want to start knitting. I have the instructions but all references to the machine online and anywhere else are to the KS901 without an S.
Are they one and the same?

Yes they are the same machine - it's the 901 bit that designates which model it is.
Hope you enjoy learning to use your machine; I have one and I'm really pleased with it.
